Join a community that is passionate about the Cincinnati Art Museum

Join a group of creative and enthusiastic individuals who dedicate their time and energy to improve the Art Museum and the Greater Cincinnati community. Art Museum volunteers can fill a variety of positions, including visitor relations, docent corps, and fundraising. Volunteer Requirements

  • Volunteers must be a current member of the Art Museum. For more information about membership, please click here.
  • Select volunteer groups require an annual dues fee. Dues are used to fund mailings, trainings, and other activities in order to be completely self-supporting and not affect the Art Museum’s budget. The one exception is the Docent Corp, whose dues are used for other docent-related activities. Please see the detailed information about each group for the specific dues amount.

Docent Corps

The Art Museum is not currently accepting any Docent applications

Docents are volunteer educators trained to present tours and programs to the public. They share their knowledge of the Art Museum and its collection with a broad range of audiences, both in the Art Museum and in the community, to encourage a life-long love of the visual arts. The Docent Corps began, in 1960, with twenty-eight docents as a joint effort between the Cincinnati Art Museum and the Junior League of Cincinnati and in cooperation with Cincinnati Public Schools. Since 1975, the Docent Corps has been under the guidance of the Cincinnati Art Museum’s Education Division. Join our 120 active docents who make up the Docent Corps today.

Requirements
No previous knowledge of art or art history is required to become a docent. Docent candidates, individuals preparing to become docents, participate in a three-semester training course that explores the Art Museum’s collection, general art history, and strategies for touring various age groups. Following successful completion of the course, candidates graduate to docent status and are requested to volunteer as a docent for at least two years.

Docents continue their education of the permanent collection, special exhibitions, and touring techniques through an on-going training program held twice monthly. In addition, there are optional workshops, day-trips, and other events for docents to expand their knowledge and friendships.

Docents pay annual dues of $30. In addition, all Art Museum volunteers are required to be Museum members.

More Information
The Art Museum is not currently recruiting new docent candidates but is happy to take the name and contact information of individuals who would like to be informed about future opportunities. If you would like to receive more information about the docent program, please contact the Cincinnati Art Museum’s Assistant Curator for Docent Learning at (513) 639.2997 or docent.program@cincyart.org.
