The Cincinnati Art Museum has a paid summer internship position for a select African American undergraduate, who will have completed their sophomore year by Summer 2012. All available Summer 2012 internships qualify for the Donald P. Sowell internship grant. Please select one of the internships below, following application instructions at top of page. Within your cover letter, please specify your interest in the Donald P. Sowell Internship Program.
This internship will assist the curator of the Contemporary Art Department with upcoming major exhibitions, including conducting research, and general department duties. There is no foreign language requirement for this position.
Requirements: Bachelors degree required, master’s degree or graduate student in Art History preferred. Transportation helpful, but not required. Foreign language not required.
Writing sample required with application. Writing sample should be a maximum ten pages with bibliography.
Term: Summer 2012 (June 15 – August 3, 2012) Start date is flexible.
Hours: Flexible schedule M-F 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. Minimum of 20 hours or 3 days per week required.

Intern will research contemporary works in glass, ceramics and wood in preparation for acquisition processing. The intern will also assist with special exhibition research on an as needed basis.

This internship position will be focused on 2 unrelated projects. On the one hand, the intern will systematically work on cataloguing the Art Museum’s substantial holdings of European miniature portrait paintings. The other project will be to assist the curator in mounting the Art Museum’s forthcoming ‘The World is an Apple: The Still Lifes of Paul Cezanne’ exhibition. This last task will require serious research skills and reading knowledge of French. Preference will be given to those who have the skills to work on both projects, although anyone with art history experience is encouraged to apply.
Requirements: College-level art history coursework, strong research and writing skills; reading knowledge of French required.
Term: Summer 2012. Negotiable, term at least 6-8 weeks

Reporting to the Assistant Curator for School-Based Learning, this position will assist with the research, development, and evaluation of K-12 school and teacher programs and resources at the Art Museum.
Requirements: Background in education, art history, studio art, or museum studies is preferred. Must be self-motivated and organized with strong written and oral communication skills. Ideal candidate will have a bachelor’s degree or be currently in their Junior or Senior year of college.

Reporting to the Assistant Curator for Community Engagement, this position will assist with our community engagement initiative, Art For Life as we work with the community to share the collection of the Cincinnati Art Museum. Intern(s) will assist in the planning and implementation of Art For Life programs. Programs are with multiple community partners, varied socio-economic participants and are for all ages. Interns will have the opportunity to take a leadership role with partners and programs that fit their background and interest level.

Intern position will assist with various projects including but not limited to: fine art photography, scanning and processing of digital images for public access and various museum needs. Intern will gain a working knowledge of museum standards for photographing and imaging fine arts.
Requirements: Candidates possessing or working toward a Fine Art degree preferred. Working knowledge of photography and PC and/or Mac graphics software is highly useful. Knowledge of Adobe Photoshop is required.

This internship position will assist the Special Events Manager and Sales Associate with various planning and administrative tasks for internal and external events including weddings, corporate functions and meetings. Administrative tasks include: adding events to the museum’s internal calendar, creating records for new events, answering phones for the office, and processing financial reports. Intern will also assist with event design and setup, identifying catering needs, sitting in on client meetings, and assisting necessary staff and clients as needed.
Requirements: The applicant should be a current student and must have good communication and customer service skills. He or she must also be highly organized, detail-oriented and able to multi-task effectively. Must be able to work evenings and weekends, and lift up to 40lbs.

This position will assist in conceptual development related to various events and exhibitions, and arrive at creative solutions that fall within the Art Museum’s branding initiatives. The intern will be tasked with the design and production of various projects including print pieces (postcards, flyers, invitations) and gallery graphics (labels, wall graphics and signage). Other tasks may include but are not limited: to upkeep and maintenance of existing graphics and signage, organization and archiving of files, preparing files for print or presentation, and various other special projects as assigned.
Requirements: Must have or be currently working toward a Bachelor’s degree in Graphic Design or related field of study. This position requires a working knowledge of the Adobe Suite and the basics of print design and production. A high level of craft and attention to typography is also needed. You will be asked to work independently on projects as well as part of a team, juggle many projects in a timely manner while meeting deadlines and maintaining a flexible and creative approach to the work.
